Governors

Mr David Ridgeon (Chair)

David was educated at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School and New College Oxford, where he took an MA in Modern Languages. Since training as a chartered accountant his career has included finance directorships of a number of City businesses, most recently in banking and insurance. He lives in Esher and is married with a son and daughter, both of whom were pupils at Newland House. He was appointed Governor in 2005 and Chair in 2016. 

Mr Richard Burden

After leaving Durham university, Richard worked with what was then Midland Bank as a management information specialist in the marketing department. Subsequently he has built a career as a hybrid programme manager operating within the business functions of major FTSE 100 organisations. He lives in Hampton and is married with two children both of whom attended Newland House. He was appointed a Governor in February 2010.

Mrs Belinda Canham

Belinda was the Headmistress of Gatehouse School in London having previously served as Head of Gatehouse School, Bedgebury Junior School, Colfe's Pre Prep School and Eaton House. She is an ISI inspector and was appointed a Magistrate in 1996. Appointed a Governor in June 2009, Belinda is married with two children and lives in South West London.

Mr Andrew Gumpert

Andrew is a commercial property lawyer, practising law in London for over 25 years, firstly with City law firm Gouldens, and since 2003 with International law firm, Jones Day. Andrew is a former pupil of Newland House and, having left the school in 1976, Andrew was educated at Queens College, Taunton. Andrew graduated from the University of Birmingham with LLB (Hons) in 1985 and completed his Law Society Final Examinations at Chester College of Law in 1986. Andrew is married with 3 daughters aged 21,19 and 17 and lives in Teddington. He was appointed Governor in October 2012.

Mrs Julia Higgins

Julia was educated at Edgbaston High School for Girls and The Abbey School in Malvern. She worked in the private rooms of a Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician as a medical secretary, has been a long haul stewardess for British Airways, completed a cookery diploma and cooked for private clients and directors' lunches, and latterly has been involved with the SPARKS Charity. She is currently the Director of Operations of the Association of Lawyers for Children. She is married with two daughter who both attended Newland House between 1994 and 2000 and lives in East Molesey. She was appointed a Governor in March 2011.

Mr Matthew Battle

Matthew has been involved in the construction and property sector for over 25 years working for Lend Lease (Bovis Construction), Bovis Southern Africa, ISG plc an Ibex Construction in various senior management roles. In 2004 he established his own business, UK Property Forums, which enables conferences and provides marketing services across the UK property sector. He lives in Hampton and is married with three boys who all attended Newland House and was appointed a Governor in November 2013.

Mrs Jane Lunnon

A graduate in English from Bristol University, Jane Lunnon took up the Headship of Wimbledon High School in 2014. Before that, she worked at Wellington College as an English teacher, Head of English and Assistant Director of Studies, before moving to Prior's Field School, to become Deputy Pastoral. Jane then re-joined Wellington in 2010 as Deputy Head. She was also a Governor at St Andrew's Woking for eight years.

Now, as the wife of an Assistant Head, the mother of teenage children, an enthusiastic, inexpert long-distance runner, a keen open water swimmer and a lover of literature, theatre, and overly ambitious cooking, she is a passionate exponent of encouraging children to give things a go and to understand that most things are possible with a bit of grit, determination and a great sense of humour ! Jane was appointed a Governor in 2015.

Dr Howard Cook

After leaving Oxford University where he studied Engineering Science, Howard worked for BP for 33 years in the UK and abroad. He retired from the post of BP Chief Engineer for Subsea Systems in 2014 and now works part time as a freelance Oil and Gas engineering consultant.  He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.  Howard is married to Katherine and they live in Hampton Wick with two boys who both attended Newland House between 2007 and 2015. He was appointed a Governor in September 2015.

Mr Harry Mann

Harry was educated at the Royal Grammar School High Wycombe and at Cambridge University where he studied Natural Sciences. After graduation he joined Shell where he qualified as  an accountant and as an MBA while working in Finance in Aberdeen, London, North-West England, Oman and Thailand. After leaving Shell, Harry worked for another oil and gas company, a mining company and a workplace consultancy. Harry is married to Clare, they live in Teddington, and their two daughters and son all attended Newland House. Harry was appointed a Governor in 2016.

Mr Mark Jopling

Mark is a Commercial Director, running a team that operates technology infrastructure and cyber security for Financial Service companies. Mark was educated at Farnborough School in Nottingham, and has a BSc in Electronic Engineering from Aston (1988) and an MBA from Warwick (1996). Mark is married and has two sons and a daughter aged 20, 17 and 14, who were all educated at Newland House School from 2001 to 2016. Mark lives in Teddington and was appointed Governor in October 2016.

Ms Dee Masters

Dee has been a barrister specialising in employment and discrimination law since 2004.  She attended St Martin’s Girls’ School before moving to London to study law at University College London and then the London School of Economics. Dee is married with one daughter who attends school in the City near to her chambers. She lives in North London. Dee was appointed Governor in 2016 having previously worked closely with the school.

Mr James Ross

After graduating from Durham University with a degree in Modern Languages, James taught in Italy and the French island of La Réunion. Subsequently, he has held teaching positions at St Paul’s boys school and King’s College School, Wimbledon teaching French and Italian. For the last ten years at King’s, James has also been Head of House. He lives in central London and in his spare time is a keen runner and theatre goer.
